The president’s house is located just around the corner from these fraternity houses and exerts a moderating presence reminding the visitor that Butler’s administration is watchful and caring in a paternalistic way.
Butler University reflects the temper and culture of the city of Indianapolis: it’s less hurried than a northeastern city. Although the campus needs some updating, the physical environment is relaxed, especially the Holcombe Planetarium where students take advantage of the woods and take walks on the trails along the river.
Winters of course are severe and students make good use of the recreation complex, the field house and football field. Two of the three first-year residence halls are built around a square forming a courtyard in the middle. The inner square is more shielded from the winds and this lends a sense of community for most of the freshmen.
